Welcome to the 2010 Season PDF Print E-mail

To The Wyckoff Football & Cheerleading Family:

Welcome to the 2010 Wyckoff Football and Cheerleading season! It is with great anticipation and excitement that I enter into this football season with you, and if the past has been any indication of your support and enthusiasm for our program, I expect this to be another extremely successful season.

As we kick off the new season, I would like to ask for your continued support of three groups: our football players/cheerleaders, our volunteer coaches, and your Football Boosters Association. Your child will undoubtedly need your help this fall, whether it be a "pick-me-up" for having a less than perfect game, or a simple ride to the field. Football season is a grueling one and your child will need every bit of help, enthusiasm, and motivation from you. Your help is also an integral part of game days. Any assistance you can lend, from being a part of the "chain-gang" to setting up or breaking down the field for games will be greatly appreciated.

I coached high school football for 13 years and never have I seen such a committed, motivated, and enthusiastic group as the men who coach your children. Their knowledge of the game and the passion for working with your children is remarkable. It is hard to comprehend the amount of time that these volunteer coaches put into making this a top of the line program. The same goes for the trainers/coaches of the cheerleaders. Hours upon hours are spent perfecting their cheers and stunts. Please take a moment when you have the opportunity to thank these men and women for their time and effort.

Also, please find a way to support the fund-raising and program enhancement efforts of the Wyckoff Football Boosters Association (WFBA). A large amount of time is spent by these volunteers to continue the outstanding tradition of Wyckoff Football. From the purchase of new equipment to the operation of the concession stand, the WFBA has helped make this program what it is.

And finally, I ask your support in keeping the game atmosphere in Wyckoff a positive and enjoyable one for everyone. We've all heard the negative press about behavior at youth sporting events. I have witnessed nothing but exemplary fan behavior at the many games I've attended in Wyckoff and I appreciate your anticipated continuation of that conduct during the upcoming season.

Best wishes for an enjoyable and successful 2010 Wyckoff Football & Cheerleading season.

Jiggs Remo and Mike Kirk Awards PDF Print E-mail

At the end of the summer of 1957, Wyckoff Recreation Commission members James "Jiggs" Remo and Mike Kirk, along with Bob Woods and Bob Jewel organized the first Wyckoff Football team consisting of 5th and 6th graders (a team that included George Hopper). The following year, a Senior team was added; Remo and Kirk coached both teams until 1971 holding practices on alternating nights. Dedicated to promoting youth sports, Kirk and Remo worked with Jiggs Farrier and others to expand the Football Program uniform and equipment inventory. Their goal was to avoid cutting any young players from the team. Later, in 1979, Kirk and Remo were part of the original Hi-Lights, a group that was formed to erect the lights on Memorial Field.

Jiggs Remo served as a coach from 1957 and the Head of the Wyckoff Football Program from 1971 until his untimely death on the field of a football game at Hess Court in Upper Saddle River in 1983. Mike Kirk served as a coach from 1957 to 1985 and succeeded Jiggs as the head of the program, and served until his retirement in 1988. Mike died in December 1990 after a long bout with cancer.

The Jiggs Remo Award was created in 1984, and the Mike Kirk Award in 1990. The awards commemorate the dedication and spirit of two great coaches and leaders of the Wyckoff Football Program. The awards are dedicated to the junior and senior player or players who over their years in the program best demonstrate team spirit and leadership both on an off the field, and elevate the level of play of others around them.
